Osseous Surgery
Osseous surgery, also known as pocket reduction surgery, is a periodontal procedure used to treat advanced gum disease. When periodontal disease progresses, deep pockets form between the teeth and gums, allowing bacteria to accumulate where regular brushing and cleaning cannot reach. Over time, this can damage the bone that supports your teeth. At our Mission Hills practice, osseous surgery is performed to clean these areas, reshape damaged bone, and reduce pocket depth so your gums can heal and reattach to the teeth.
The goal of the procedure is to halt the progression of gum disease, preserve your natural teeth, and create a healthier environment that is easier to maintain with everyday oral hygiene.
Why Osseous Surgery May Be Needed
When gum disease has advanced beyond what deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) alone can resolve, osseous surgery is often recommended. Signs that you may benefit from this treatment include persistent deep periodontal pockets, gum inflammation that does not improve with non-surgical care, bone loss around the teeth, and loose or shifting teeth. Treating these problems early helps protect your bone, gums, and remaining teeth from further damage.
What to Expect During the Procedure
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. The gum tissue is gently folded back to provide access to the tooth roots and underlying bone. Plaque, tartar, and bacteria are thoroughly removed, and any irregular or damaged bone is smoothed and reshaped to eliminate the pockets where bacteria collect. The gums are then repositioned snugly around the teeth and secured, often with sutures, to promote proper healing.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients experience only mild discomfort and swelling following osseous surgery, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medication. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including guidance on diet, oral hygiene, and follow-up visits to monitor your healing. Maintaining excellent home care and attending regular periodontal maintenance appointments are essential to keeping gum disease from returning.
If you have been diagnosed with advanced gum disease or have concerns about your gum health, contact our Mission Hills office to schedule an evaluation and learn whether osseous surgery is right for you.
